MU softball opens on winning note OXFORD, OH -- Miami kicked off its home and MAC schedules with an 8-2 win over Western Michigan Friday at the MU Softball Stadium. Madilyn Reeves raised her record to 5-2, scattering six hits while striking out five over seven innings. Rissa Bajusz (6-6) took the loss for Western Michigan. It was the third straight win for Miami, which raised its season mark to 16-6. The Broncos fell to 10-11. The RedHawks struck first with . . . MVP Freeman leads Zips past RedHawks MAC Player of the Year Enrique Freeman exploded for 30 points and Ali Ali tallied 14 to lead No. 3 seed Akron past seventh-seeded Miami. The RedHawks were led by Anderson Mirambeaux (17) and Darweshi Hunter (16), who combined for 33 points. The Zips made just 3 of 23 shots (13%) from beyond the arc, but they dominated in the paint (52-30) and on the boards (44-28). That allowed them to shoot 47 percent from the field overall and score 31 field goals. Miami connected on 25 of 59 (42.4%) from the field and 6 of 24 (25%) on threes. The RedHawks moved in front with an Eian Elmer triple at 16:50 of the first stanza and led by as many as nine points. Akron, however, chipped away. Freeman's slam just before the buzzer gave UA a 37-34 edge. After the Zips built a 14-point lead, Miami could get no closer than seven points (56-49) following a Mekhi Cooper bucket at 10:43. Three RedHawks among MAC basketball honorees The names of three Miami RedHawks surfaced Wedneday as the Mid-American Conference released its All-MAC and specialty awards. The Zips (13-5 MAC) finished the regular season in second place -- one game behind Toledo. Miami tied Western Michigan for sixth place and settled for a No. 7 tourney seed due to a pair of losses to WMU during the season. Neither Akron nor Miami, however, has looked all that good coming down the stretch. Akron dropped four of its last six MAC games. The two wins were against Kent State and Northern Illinois. The losses were to Toledo, Ohio, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan. Dropping the last two cost UA a regular season title. Miami, meanwhile, made the tournament field thanks to . . . Hitchcock tosses two-hit shutout against Paladins First home/MAC game scheduled for Friday ATHENS, GA -- The Miami RedHawks are coming home on a winning note. Miami softball shutout Furman for the second day in a row Sunday, run-ruling the Paladins 8-0 in five innings. That victory followed a 5-0 shutout of Furman Saturday at Jack Turner Stadium. With the win, MU raised its season record to 15-6, while Furman fell to 10-12. The RedHawks play their first home game and open Mid-American Conference play Friday (March 15, 5 p.m. ET) when they host Western Michigan. Miami led the Bulldogs 4-3 through five innings in the opener. However, UGA tallied three times in the sixth to pull out a 6-4 win. Madilyn Reeves pitched seven strong innings of three-hit, shutout softball to lead MU to a 5-0 win over Furman in Game Two. RedHawk softball drops two in Athens ATHENS, GA -- Jacksonville State pushed across four runs in the seventh for a walk off 8-7 victory and No. 7 Georgia cruised past Miami 13-2 as the RedHawks dropped back-to-back games Friday at Jack Turner Stadium. GAME 1: JACKSONVILLE STATE (8-13) 8, MIAMI (13-4) 7 -- Jenna Golembiewski and Karlie Spaid had two hits apiece to lead Miami's offense. It didn't go well at all. Friday's new challenge is to upset an arch-rival that is arguably the MAC's hottest team. Miami hosts Ohio Friday night (7 p.m.ET) in the regular season finale for both teams, with each already guaranteed a spot in next week's MAC Tournament. The RedHawks (9-8 MAC) are currently tied with Bowling Green (9-8 MAC) for fifth place -- two games behind Central Michigan (11-6 MAC) and one game ahead of Kent State (8-9) and Western Michigan (8-9).
