OXFORD, OH -- Miami held heralded sophomore Emoni Bates to 17 points, but turnovers proved costly as the RedHawks fell to Eastern Michigan 74-69 Saturday at Millett Hall.

With the victory, EMU broke a five-game losing streak and moved its record to 2-6 MAC, 5-16 overall. Miami, meanwhile, dropped its fifth straight game and is now 1-7 in conference action (7-14 overall).

Bates, a 6-10 guard averaging 20.5 ppg,, was coming off a 43-point performance at Toledo, where he scored EMU's last 29 points before halftime. He was one of three Eagles to reach double figures against MU. Noah Farrakhan led the way, hitting 7-of-10 from the field on the way to 20 points. Tyson Acuff contributed 12.

Point guard Mekhi Lairy led the RedHawks with . . .

Miami upset bid falls short at Akron
Casteneda, treys give Zips the edge

AKRON, OH --
They brought very different records into Tuesday's MAC matchup, but it ultimately took Akron all 40 minutes to hold off visiting Miami 73-68.

It was the first MAC coaching battle between Akron's John Groce and his brother Travis Steele, who took over the RedHawks program this year. With its fourth straight loss, MU fell to 1-6 in conference play (7-13 overall). The Zips remained undefeated at home and raised their record to 6-1 MAC (14-6 overall).

Akron senior guard Xavier Castaneda, the league's top scorer, topped his 19.9 ppg average with a 32-point night against Miami. He connected on 8-of-16 from the field overall and 10-of-11 free throws. Some of his biggest baskets came on shots from long distance, including a triple to put UA up 69-64 with 53 seconds left.

Miami scored four straight points to . . .

BOWLING GREEN, OH --
A career performance by Leon Ayers III and the Falcons big night at the free throw line combined to help Bowling Green hand the Miami RedHawks an 83-73 defeat Saturday at the Stroh Center.

It was the third straight loss for MU, which fell to 1-5 in MAC play (7-12 overall). Bowling Green, meanwhile, broke a three-game losing streak and raised its MAC record to 3-3 (9-10 overall).

Ayers led the way for BGSU with a career-high 31 points. He connected on 10-of-12 from the field, 3-of-5 trey attempts and 8-of-9 free throws. OXFORD, OH -- After surrendering a double-digit first half lead, Northern Illinois shot 61.5 percent from the field after intermission to register an 81-77 victory over Miami Tuesday at Millett Hall.

With the win, NIU raised its MAC record to 2-3 (6-12 overall). The RedHawks fell to 1-4 in conference play (7-11 overall).

Sophomore guard David Coit led the Huskies, sinking 9-of-15 shots from the floor and 3-of-5 treys on the way to 21 points. Zarique Nutter contributed 16 points and eight rebounds, followed by Kaleb Thornton (13 points) and Anthony Crump (11 points).

"In MAC play, there are some terrific guards," Miami Head Coach Travis Steele said. "Every team has got one or two guys that can really go -- create, play off the bounce, shoot the ball . . . We tried a little bit of everything (but) we really didn't have any answers for them."

MUNCIE, IN --
Miami Head Coach Travis Steele is fond of reminding, "Defense travels."

Conversely, as with any experienced coach, he knows offense may not travel, and Saturday's results supported that observation. The RedHawks made just 1-of-13 3-point tries while falling to Ball State 75-61 at Worthen Arena.

It was the eighth win in nine games for BSU, which bounced back from a road loss at Ohio Tuesday night. The Cardinals (12-5 overall) are now 3-1 in conference play, while Miami (7-10 overall) falls to 1-3.

Both teams finished with .  .  .

MU beats odds to knock off Buffalo
RedHawks overcome fouls, turnovers

OXFORD, OH --
If somebody had asked Miami Head Coach Travis Steele how he liked his chances in an upcoming game if he knew three starters would foul out and his team would commit 22 turnovers, he likely wouldn't have been very optimistic. Add in that the opponent would be a 2-0 (MAC) Buffalo squad that ranked fifth in the nation in fast break points, and the odds would go down even further.

Odds be darned, however, as the RedHawks overcame it all to knock off Buffalo 91-80 Tuesday at Millett Hall. Four RedHawks reached double figures, with Mekhi Lairy leading the way. He scored 20 points, dished out 11 assists and grabbed seven rebounds while playing nearly 39 minutes.

OXFORD, OH --
Miami head coach Travis Steele summed it up: "There's a reason he was conference player of the year."

Speaking to media after Saturday's 69-66 Kent State win over MU, Steele was quick to credit KSU guard Sincere Carry. Last year's MAC Player of the Year played a key role in lifting the Flashes to a hard-fought win against Miami. Carry finished with 31 points and  committed just one turnover while playing over 39 minutes.

"We tried to do a lot of different things (on him), and none of it was working," said Steele, who felt his own squad played one of its better games of the season despite falling to 0-2 MAC (6-9 overall). Kent State raised its own record to 12-3 on the year and 2-0 in MAC play.

Carry already had 28 points when . . .

Visiting Miami led nearly 80 percent of the game, but RedHawks shooting went cold late and Central Michigan came from behind to defeat MU 68-56 Tuesday at McGuirk Arena.

Neither team shot all that well in their Mid-American Conference opener. Miami (6-8, 0-1 MAC)  finished at 33.9 percent from the floor and 19.2 percent on treys. CMU (6-8. 1-0 MAC) connected on 35.7 percent overall and 16.7 percent outside the arc.
