Newest MU Dean can score ![]() With the departure of All-MAC Third Team guard Mekhi Lairy, the Miami RedHawks have some work to do on replacing Lairy's scoring and point guard skills. When handshakes turn ugly . . . ![]() By MIKE SMITH After the recent "assault" incident at a Bowling Green vs. Memphis WNIT game, I am revisiting my own personal debate about postgame handshake lines. I really have strong feeling for and against the tradition, but the practical side of my brain is certainly threatening to take charge. If it does, that would be in favor of discontinuing what should be a simple act of sportsmanship. The problem is that the practice is becoming both less simple and . . . 2022-23 RedHawks Basketball Photo Favorites It was a long season and, of course, we accumulated a bunch of pictures along the way. Review of 2022-23 season finds progress ![]() By MIKE SMITH How do you evaluate the success of a season? Any answer, of course, would have to depend on how one defines success. Is it a national championship? It is a conference championship? Is it 20 wins ... 18 wins ... ??? How about partial credit for beating a bitter rival? Gauging the recent Miami RedHawks men's basketball season is especially difficult. It depends on coaches and specific situations, but quick fixes for mid-major programs can be elusive and/or fleeting. Upon taking over a somewhat struggling program in March of 2022, Travis Steele combined a few transfers with several returning players and some young talent to fill out a roster. Especially given Steele's strong foundation approach, one of the . . . Rolling Rockets close out Miami 2022-23 By MIKE SMITH

It was could MU make the tourney. The best chance to get there was to beat Buffalo, but a second half Bulls rally snuffed out that option. The only other tourney-enabling scenario was for all three teams locked one game behind Miami to lose Friday. That did happen, with Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Bowling Green all falling. Regardless of who reached Cleveland, the No. 8 seed was going to meet No. 1 Toledo, and Miami will face an outstanding UT squad at 11 a.m. Thursday in Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. Toledo ran its current winning streak to a national-best 15 games Friday with an 87-81 victory over Ball State. That locked down a third straight MAC regular season title for Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk's crew. Still, the Rockets envision . . . Victory slips away, but RedHawks slip in anyway Miami will face No. 1 seed Toledo Thursday ![]() By MIKE SMITH BUFFALO, NY -- Miami Head Coach Travis Steele wanted his team to create its own "luck" Friday by beating Buffalo on the road to seal the eighth -- and final -- spot in next week's MAC Men's Basketball Tournament. For 30 minutes, it appeared MU was going to take care of business once again for its fifth straight victory. Things quickly changed in the second half, however, as UB opened with a 13-0 run to take the lead. The Bulls then went on to post a 68-63 senior night win. It was the third win in four games for Buffalo, which raised its record to 9-9 in MAC play (15-16 overall). The Bulls had already clinched a tourney spot and finish sixth in the MAC standing. Miami, however, was in a position to put itself in the tourney with a win. If it lost, MU needed all three teams that were one game behind to lose in Friday's action, and . . . Win and they're in! Into the MAC tournament, that is. Of course, the flip side of that is: Lose and the picture doesn't look nearly as rosy. By winning their fourth straight game Tuesday, the RedHawks (6-11 MAC) are one game in front of three other teams vying for the final MAC tournament playoff spot.
