MU ends slide with 21-point win over Cardinals By MIKE SMITH OXFORD, Oh -- Miami's recently sputtering offense exploded for 50 second half points, and the RedHawks' defense recorded 12 steals as MU knocked off Ball State 80-59 Saturday at Millett Hall. The victory, which broke a three-game Miami losing streak, raised the RedHawks record to 6-6 in MAC play (12-13 overall). Ball State dropped to 4-8 MAC (12-13 overall) with its third straight loss. "I was happy for our guys to get a win. We went through a little tough stretch," Miami Head Coach Travis Steele said afterward. Freshman guard Eian Elmer led four RedHawks in double figures. After knocking off Akron and Kent State in late January, MU has is winless in Febrary. MU offense sputters again in loss to Panthers By MIKE SMITH ATLANTA, GA -- The Miami RedHawks' offensive struggles continued Saturday as Georgia State handed MU a decisive 73-53 loss at the GSU Convocation Center. The game was part of the MAC-Sunbelt challenge, and all Mid-American Conference teams faced road tilts against Sunbelt Conference foes Saturday. It was the 'Hawks third straight loss and second straight game in which MU failed to reach 60 points. Miami is now 11-13 (5-6 MAC) on the campaign. Georgia State raised its season record to 11-13 (5-7 SBC) with its second straight win. Four Panthers reached double figures. RedHawks face Georgia State in MAC-Sunbelt Challenge By MIKE SMITH Miami basketball takes a break from Mid-American Conference action Saturday when the RedHawks face Georgia State in Atlanta. The matchup is part of the MAC-Sunbelt Challenge, and all MAC teams will be facing non-MAC foes. The Panthers are 10-13 overall with a 5-7 Sun Belt mark that leaves them five games off league-leading Appalachian State and Troy -- both with 10-2 Sun Belt Conference records. Miami, meanwhile, is now five games behind MAC-leading Akron after dropping a home game to Northern Illinois Tuesday. It was MU's second straight loss, leaving the RedHawks tied for sixth place along with Kent State and Western Michigan. It was the second straight win for NIU, which lost its first eight MAC outings but has shown signs of turning the corner in recent contests. Miami dropped its second straight after knocking off Akron and Kent State in the week before that. Their opponent is Northern Illinois, which won five of its first six games this season. Since that time, they've recorded two wins in fifteen outings. Of course, the only MAC win came just last Saturday when NIU downed Eastern Michigan 76-66. Perhaps equally notable is that several days earlier, the Huskies took Central Michigan into two overtimes before falling 84-77. The Chippewas are tied for second place among MAC teams. Both teams entered the contest with 5-4 conference records, but the Bobcats strong shooting performance helped them move ahead of Western Michigan and Miami in MAC standings.
