Miami to open against Cavaliers in Knoxville No. 3 Seed Tennessee and Dayton also in regional By MIKE SMITH Fresh off their Mid-American Conference Softball Tournament title, the RedHawks spent part of their early Sunday evening together as they watched the NCAA Tournament selection show. As MAC tournament winner, the No. 24 RedHawks earned an automatic spot in the NCAA event. So Sunday was about finding out some important details. Topping the list were three questions: Where would they be playing? Who would they play next, and what other programs are in their regional There are 16 regionals. However, MU players and fans didn't have to wait long. The show started with No. 1 Seed Texas' regional, followed by No. 2 Oklahoma. The No. 3 seed went to Tennessee, which will host Dayton, Miami and Virginia in Knoxville. That action starts . . . . . . Friday, with Miami meeting UVa at noon p.m. ET. (ESPN+). Tennessee will face Dayton in the 2:30 p.m. ET contest. "(With) that (NCAA) 400-mile rule (promoting short travel scenarios), we kind of knew we were going there," Miami Head Coach Kirin Kumar said. "They (UT Volunteers) are a top five team and Virginia has a great team. Dayton's had a great season, so we're just going to have to show them how we can play." Friday's winners would face each other Saturday. Likewise, the two Friday losers would meet. Each one-loss team would then face off in a Saturday elimination contest. Sunday would pit Saturday's survivor against the undefeated team. Should the latter lose Sunday, a second game would be played to determine the regional champion. The 16 regional winners will advance to super-regional play May 23-26. Eight super-regional sites host two-team matchups, with those teams playing a best-of-three series that determines which eight teams advance to the College World Series. VIRGINIA QUICK OVERVIEW
Virginia enters the tournament with a 32-18 overall mark. The Cavaliers were 15-9 in Atlantic Coast Conference play and fell to No. 23 in ACC Softball Tournament quarterfinal action last Thursday. TENNESSEE QUICK OVERVIEW As for Tennessee, suffice it to say UT is the NCAA tourney's No. 3 (of 16) seed(s). That alone says plenty. Each of the SEC's 13 teams made the tournament, with eight hosting regionals. UT earned the regular season championship, although Florida prevailed in the SEC tournament. DAYTON QUICK OVERVIEW Dayton owns a 33-19 overall record and went 19-7 in A-10 play. The Flyers are on a four game win streak, with the last three taking them to an A-10 Softball Tournament title. This is UD's first NCAA tournament appearance. More details to come . . . Comments are closed.
