Miami beats Dayton before falling to Virginia RedHawks exit tourney; finish campaign with 49 wins MRO STAFF KNOXVILLE, TN -- For those who argue that good pitching beats good hitting, maybe they should bookmark Eden Bigham's performance against the No. 24 Miami RedHawks Friday and Saturday. Bigham (16-7) tossed two shutouts against MU, backing up a two-hit 7-0 Cavalier win Friday with a one-hit 6-0 UVA victory Saturday. The latter eliminated Miami, ending a record-breaking season with the RedHawks finishing 49-9. Virgina, which was run-ruled (without Bigham) by regional host Tennessee 12-0 earlier Saturday, will face the Lady Volunteers again Sunday, but it would have to beat UT twice to move on to super-regional play. Miami did manage to pick up one win on the weekend, pulling out a 4-0 win over Dayton. However, the RedHawks still managed just four hits -- including their only home run of the weekend -- against UD. RedHawk starter Addy Jarvis (19-2) scattered eight hits while preserving the shutout. It was enough to give Miami another shot at Virginia, but Bigham once again used a vexing array of pitches and locations to thwart RedHawk hitters. The Cavaliers ace struck out a total of 17 batters and walked four in 14 innings. Miami managed just two baserunners in each matchup. Kate Kobayashi and Hadley Parisien singled against UVA Friday. Allie Cummins' sixth inning single to left was Miami's only hit Saturday. CLICK READ MORE FOR DETAILS . . . MIAMI 4, DAYTON 0 -- The Flyers faced Miami after a relatively impressive showing against regional host Tennessee Friday in the opener for both teams. UT won the contest, but it was a 3-0 final. The Vols would later blast Virginia 12-0. -- Dayton got two of its eight hits against Jarvis in the first inning, but MU avoided damage when 3B Karli Spaid snagged Chloe Wong's liner for the final out. -- Lightning in the area forced an hours-long delay. Although UD got two runners on, Jarvis got out of the inning without allowing a run. -- Miami's biggest inning of the entire weekend was the bottom of the second. Golembiewski started the rally with a single. Three straight walks -- the last two Hadley Parisien -- forced in a run. Starter Sarah Bailitz (8-8) was then replaced with Haven Dwyer. The junior from Cincinnati (McNicholas) did not allow a hit or issue a walk, but two more RedHawks scored. Chloe Parks came home on a Dayton error. Bartholomew then scored on Spaid's fielder's choice to give MU a 3-0 lead. -- After a scoreless third inning, Miami added one more run on Parisien's one-out homer to left center field. -- Dayton's best scoring opportunity came in the fifth. The bases were loaded with one out when Maddie Kapsimalis flied to medium left field. Golembiewski's throw home was good enough to stop the runner tagging at third from advancing. However, MU catcher saw the runner tagging at second had gone too far and a two-runner rundown ensued. Miami handled it perfectly, finishing a double play on what went down in the scorebook as 7-2-4-2-6-3. -- Dayton replaced Dwyer, who gave up two hits and one run in 4.1 innings, with one out and one on in sixth. Izzy Kemp replaced her, retiring the final two batters. -- Jarvis induced two quick outs in the seventh before a pair of UD singles. Kapsimalis hit a sharp liner to center, but Kobayashi was there for the final out. VIRGINIA 6, MIAMI 0 -- With UD vs MU finishing near 9 p.m., the RedHawks were playing back-to-back games. Virginia, meanwhile, had some down time to regroup after its lopsided loss to Tennessee in Saturday's Game One at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. -- Both coaches went with what worked previously in the circle. That set up a Bigham versus Jarvis pitching matchup. The latter had just thrown 110 pitches against Dayton. -- Although she would throw another 98 against Virginia, Jarvis held up well early. She allowed just one third-inning run through four inning. Miami, however, did not generate a base runner during that span. -- The Cavaliers' first score came on a third-inning home run by Jade Hylton, who also homered against MU Friday. -- Virginia broke the game open in the fifth. Senior Abby Weaver's single to center scored one run. After a ground out, Shelby Barbee made it 5-0 with a three-run homer to left. -- Lauren VanAssche led off UVA's sixth with a triple to center and tallied the game's final run on a Kassisdy Hudson single to center. Madilyn Reeves, who went the distance in a loss to Virginia Friday, took over for Jarvis and held the Cavaliers hitless over 2.0 innings of work. -- Miami's lone base hit of the evening came with two out in the sixth. Cummins, who had previously battled Bigham to a 14-pitch fly out, finally broke through with a solid line drive to left field. -- Miami's only other runner was Bewick. She reached on an error to open the fifth and took a four-pitch walk in the seventh. It was Bigham's only walk of the contest. She finished throwing 91 pitches while striking out seven and walking one. RedHawk hurlers combined for 128 pitches, allowing six runs (2 earned) with six Ks and three walks. Comments are closed.
