RedHawks bounce back with walk-off win By MIKE SMITH CLEMSON, SC -- Four different RedHawks belted home runs and Jenna Golembiewski tallied the winning run as Miami edged UConn 7-6 Sunday at McWhorter Stadium. Ashley Hitchcock (3-1) tossed the final two innings, picking up the win while allowing three hits and one run. With the victory, MU bounced back from a pair of losses Saturday and raised its season record to 9-2. UConn dropped to 4-11, including two losses to Miami over the weekend. Addy Jarvis got the start for MU and . . . . . . blanked the Huskies through three innings. Miami, meanwhile, plated runs in each of those frames. Karli Spaid got the RedHawks rolling with a two-run homer in the first.
She picked up another RBI in the second, driving in Kate Kobayashi with a single to left. Sami Bewick then put MU u 4-0 with a solo homer in the third. UConn cut the margin in half with two fourth inning runs. Both scored on Hope Jenkins' homer to left. Allie Cummins hit a solo circuit shot in the bottom half, moving MU in front 5-2. However, UConn plated three runs in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5. After two straight singles, Grace Jenkins doubled in two runs. She later scored herself on a Hope Jenkins single. Miami scored in every inning but the fifth, so when Grace Jenkins singled to first, scoring Haley Coupal, the Huskies had their only lead of the day (6-5). Kobayashi knotted the score again with a sixth inning home run. After Hitchcock kept UConn off the board in the seventh, Miami pushed across a walk-off winning run in the bottom half. Golembiewski got it started with a leadoff walk and eventually came around to score on a Holly Blaska single. NOTES: -- UConn outhit MU 11-8 and Miami recorded the game's only error. -- Karli Spaid was the only RedHawk with multiple hits (2) and RBI's (3). Leadoff hitter Allie Cummins went 1 for 2 with two walks. -- UConn went 0-4 at the Clemson Classic. Two of the losses were to Miami The other two were to Ole Miss (2-1) and No. 9 Clemson (3-2). -- After hosting No. 1 (and national champion) Oklahoma last year, Miami visits the Sooners Friday.
