RedHawks listed at 36 in USA Today 1-133 poll By MIKE SMITH A USA Today poll, released today (Monday, Nov. 13) ranks college football Division I teams from 1-133. Naturally, there is interest at the top, where Michigan leads five teams with perfect 10-0 records. Georgia, Ohio State, Florida State and Washington follow. Mid-American Conference football fans might be interested where some of the MAC teams fall. Some were not that surprising. Some were. Toledo, which is a last-second field goal from being a perfect 10-0 itself, comes in at No. 25, with some really good teams behind it. Undefeated Liberty, for example, is one spot back at No. 26. The Miami RedHawks are at No. 36. Ironically, that puts them . . . Rebound, fast-break problems lead to Miami loss Hunter again scores 21 to lead RedHawks By MIKE SMITH OXFORD, OH - Darweshi Hunter equaled his opening night total with 21 points again Saturday, but the Miami RedHawks fell to Texas State 75-65 at Saturday Millett Hall. Miami fell to 0-2 with the loss, while TSU evened its record at 1-1. Texas State dominated the boards, out-rebounding the hosts 44-26 overall, including a 20-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. With MU center Anderson Mirambeaux out until at least some time in December (and 7-1 Reece Potter also unavailable), the Bobcats were able to register a 36-22 edge on points in the paint. "I told our guys before the game, they (TSU) are a really good rebounding team. They had 21 offensive rebounds in Game 1," Miami Head Coach Travis Steel said. "We don't have two bigs right now. . . . It is what it is, so our guys have to block out. . . It's not rocket science." Four TSU players reached double figures, led by Tyrel Morgan's 19 points. Kaden Gumbs added 14, while Brandon Love (13) and Christian Turner (12) combined for 25 points. Three Miami players reached double figures. Joining Hunter were . . . NOTEBOOK - Postgame ... Miami vs Akron -- Mike Smith -- -- Miami Head Coach Chuck Martin was satisfied with the 19-0 win over Akron Wednesday, but disappointed in the offense. The win took MU to 8-2, setting up a big matchup next week against Buffalo. Martin noted the Bulls beat Miami in the final minutes last year. "We got out of Dodge and we're 8-2 . . . Now we're one win away from getting to Detroit" for the MAC Championship game. -- MU's defense managed just 236 yards of total offense. "Offensively, we weren't very good," Martin said. "We didn't have a good enough plan on offense . . . We called a lot of plays and none of them worked. . . . When that happens, you say, 'Hey, it starts with the plan, and the plan wasn't very good.'" -- As usual in post-Gabbert times, most of . . . RedHawks defense shuts out Zips in 19-0 victory Offense struggles, but MU posts eighth win -- BY MIKE SMITH --
OXFORD, OH -- It wasn't pretty, but the Miami RedHawks did what they most needed to do Wedneday night against Akron. They won! With the victory, Miami (8-2, 5-1 MAC) remained atop the MAC East standings. Akron (2-8, 1-5 MAC) slipped back into the loss column after picking up its first MAC victory last week against Kent State. Defenses dominated, with neither team reaching 250 yards. Akron, which registered 212 yards of total offense had 14 first downs, while Miami recorded 11 first downs while generating 236 yards. Offense has been a challenge for MU since losing quarterback Brett Gabbert to a season ending injury in a loss to Toledo. Gabbert was among the league's top passers. His replacement, Aveon Smith, is more of a running threat who can compliment Miami's ground game. Smith completed 8 of 17 passes against Akron for a . . . Turnovers, free throws set up MU loss at Evansville By MIKE SMITH EVANSVILLE, IN -- After leading by eight points with 12:47 remaining, a young Miami RedHawks team fell to the Evansville Purple Aces 72-64 Monday at the Ford Center. It was the opener for both teams. Turnovers and free throws helped turn the tide against MU, which shot 48.1 percent from the field overall and 50 percent (10 of 20) outside the arc. Evansville got to the free throw line for 30 tosses and made 21 (70%). Miami, which connected on 78.7 percent from the stripe last year, had 11 charity tosses and hit just four against Evansville. The RedHawks also . . . Young RedHawks team anxious to launch new season Talented freshmen group to see plenty of non-conference action By MIKE SMITH Travis Steele's Miami RedHawks open their 2023 season Monday with an 8 p.m. tilt at Evansville. The same two teams opened last season, with the Purple Aces pulling out a 78-74 victory. Openers are typically interesting, almost regardless of opponent. However, especially in these days of player movement, most fans are anxious to see new talent. Of course, last year, Miami fans were getting their first look at the RedHawks under new Head Coach Travis Steele. That alone would have generated significant curiosity. However, MU also underwent significant roster changes. Among the 2022-23 newcomers was center Anderson Mirambeaux who played very little (5.5 mpg) and barely moved the scoring needle with an average of 1.5 ppg. over the previous season at Cleveland State. It came as a pleasant surprise then when . . . Holmes elevated to associate head coach Miami University head men's basketball coach Travis Steele has announced Jonathan Holmes has been promoted to associate head coach. Holmes joined Steele's staff in May of 2022 as an Assistant Coach.
"I am thrilled to announce that Jonathan Holmes is being elevated to Associate Head Coach. It is well deserved. I feel like I have the best staff in the country," said Steele. "Coach Summers and Coach Holmes are more than ready to be . . . |
