Lairy scores career-high 34, but MU falls to 'Dogs By MIKE SMITH ATHENS, GA -- Three days after cruising past Goshen College, the Miami RedHawks (1-2) found themselves playing with the Big Dawgs. Dawgs, that is, as in Georgia. Last year's Miami team pulled off an upset win over Georgia, but that MU bunch was a much different squad. This year's team, under the direction of new Head Coach Travis Steele, is a much younger group. Tuesday's final results, therefore, were not all that surprising -- a 77-70 Georgia victory at Stegeman Colesium. Until several more experienced players return, the RedHawks are grinding through November with a relatively young group. Point guard Mekhi Lairy was the only returning . . . Second half surge sends MU past Maple Leafs By MIKE SMITH OXFORD, OH -- After struggling to a late first-half 21-all tie, the Miami RedHawks (1-1) went on to cruise past Goshen College (Ind) 87-44 Saturday afternoon at Millett Hall. Former William & Mary player Julian Lewis and freshman Billy Smith led four RedHawks in double figures. Each registered a double-double, with Lewis scoring 17 points with grabbing 10 rebounds. Point guards, biggies among hoop signees Miami basketball coach Travis Steele has announced the addition of five new student athletes who signed with the RedHawks Wednesday on National Signing Day. The group consists of two guards, two forwards and a center. Among other plusses, it provides MU with point guard talent and front line help. Battle of the Bricks goes to Bobcats MU's Gabbert, Hippenhammer connect on three TDs By MIKE SMITH OXFORD, OH - It was another "Battle of the Bricks" Tuesday at Yager Stadium, and in the end Ohio (5-1 MAC, 7-3 overall) walked away with another brick for its road to a possible MAC East title. The Bobcats' potent offense rolled up 557 yards and controlled the ball for 41:20, eventually wearing down Miami's defense on the way to a 37-21 victory. It was a 7-7 game before Ohio kicked a field goal to close the first half. When the teams returned, Ohio's offense went into another gear.
