Gruden video recalls many Miami greats ![]() By MIKE SMITH OMG ... I may still be chuckling when I go to sleep tonight! Earlier today, I received a link to a Jon Gruden post on X (formerly Twitter). I will post the link below, but let me BRIEFLY preface it with a few remarks and background. The video begins with Gruden bringing a box into the room. Apparently, it is from Miami Football Coach Chuck Martin. Gruden gets the outer (shipping) box open easily enough, but spends the next several minutes mauling his way into the inner box. It is the . . . . . . latter struggle that really gets me going, because it reminds me of the way I end up opening some packages at Christmas time. Lets just say that what starts out gently doesn't always end up that way.
From the time he walks into the room until he leaves, Gruden talks about Miami -- especially related to it's status as the "Cradle of Coaches." However, not only does it cover a LONG list of successful Miami football coaches and players, he also points out successful connections in other sports. There are some "missing" names, but Gruden seems to have some fun while reeling off a bunch of former players and coaches. A fun exercise might be to count just how many Miami names he drops in during the roughly 7:15 video. As informative as it is, Gruden's sense of humor really helps make this video special. Early into he piece, he notes his "social" trips to Oxford during his playing days in Dayton. He reads a hand-written note from coach Martin and spends the next several minutes unpacking his "goodies" box while lauding the people who have allowed MU to shine over the years. Gruden can come across as a very dry wit, but you might not know it by this video. His over-the-top style makes for humor even as he rattles off information that covers decades of Miami success. By me, its well worth the viewing. Comments are closed.
