RedHawks finish off Flashes for sweep ![]() By MIKE SMITH KENT, OH -- On a day when offenses combined for 23 runs and 27 hits, the Miami RedHawks softball team posted a 14-9 win over Kent State Saturday at Devine Diamond. That victory gave the RedHawks (12-14, 3-0 MAC) a sweep of the MAC-opening weekend series. Kent State fell to 7-19 overall (0-3 MAC). Madilyn Reeves (8-6) picked up the win, surrendering six hits and five runs (3 earned) while walking five and hitting a batter. She did not record a strikeout. Shelbie Krieger and Le'a Chevrier tossed an inning apiece, each giving up two runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk. Carley Penner (1-3) took the . . . . . . loss for KSU, allowing six runs on six hits with four walks in two innings. Ella Johnson went five innings, surrendering eight runs on 11 hits while striking out four and walking two. Miami's Chloe Parks and Ella Carter banged out four hits apiece, combining for six rbi's. Kaylee Oh and Shelby Kunkel recorded two hits each while totaling seven rbi's. Holly Merritt (2) also had a multi-hit game. MIAMI 14, KENT STATE 9
• Both teams put single runs on the board. Kunkel singled in the RedHawks run, but MU left two on base. • Miami used four hits and two walks to score four runs. Kunkel's double to left center was the big blow, bringing home three runners. • Oh homered for the second straight day, with Saturday's shot providing three runs. • Miami led 9-1 until Kent State pushed across two unearned runs in the bottom of the third. Penner's double to left was the key hit. • Kent State made it a 9-5 game with two more runs in the fourth. Further damage was averted when Megan Claierhout lined to short with two out and two on. • After a scoreless fifth MU added a single run in the sixth. Parks opened with a; double and Carter brought her home on a single to right. Down 10-5, the Flashes closed in with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Aralyn Nogays bases-clearing double to left brought in three of the scores. • Now up by just one (10-9), Miami responded with four runs of its own in the seventh. Jenna Golembiewski brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly to left. Parks singled in another before Carter belted a two-run homer to left. Reeves returned to the circle for MU in the bottom half, allowing a single but no runs to close out the RedHawks win. Comments are closed.
