MU softball opens MAC play with DH sweep ![]() KENT, OH -- Miami's offense exploded for 21 runs, while RedHawk pitchers held Kent State (7-18, 0-2 MAC) to four tallies as MU swept the Flashes in a Friday double-header at Devine Diamond. It was the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams, and the defending MAC champs showed they are still dangerous despite the departure of a talented senior group following the 2024 season. Miami (11-14, 2-0 MAC) defeated KSU 7-1 in the first game and followed up with a 14-4 victory in Game 2. CLICK READ MORE FOR DETAILS . . . GAME 1 - MIAMI 7, KENT STATE 1 • Sophomore Madilyn Reeves raised her record to 7-6 on the campaign with a two-hitter. She struck out five and walked just one batter. The Flashes only run came on a two-out homer by Savannah Wing in the final inning. • Kaylee Oh led the game off with a walk and came around to score on a double to left center by Shelby Kunkel. • MU added two more in the third. Danitza Hernandez opened with a double and scored on a single by Oh, who advanced to second on the throw. After moving up on a ground out, she scored on a Jenna Golembiewski sacrifice fly. • Taking advantage of two KSU errors, the RedHawks stretched their lead to 6-0 with three more runs in the fourth. McKenna Campbell's single to left and a fielding error allowed Ella Carter to score. Oh's double to left drove in two more. • Both teams added a run in the final inning. Oh led off the Miami seventh with a; walk and later scored on a Chloe Parks ground out. Kent State's run came on Wint's two-out homer to left. • Oh finished with two hits and two walks, leading to three rbi's and three runs scored. Kunkel had two hits, including a double. GAME 2 - MIAMI 14, KENT STATE 3
• Miami junior Le'a Chevrier threw all five innings while raising her season record to 4-5. She allowed three runs (1 earned), striking out seven, allowing four walks and hitting one along the way. • Abbey Pochie (1-6) took the loss for Kent State, retiring one batter while giving up three runs (2 earned). Three other KSU pitchers finished the remaining 4.2 innings, surrendering a combined 11 runs on 10 hits. • After failing to homer in Game 1, the RedHawks thrived on circuit shots in the second game. Kunkel, Parks and Ella Carter all homered in the first, driving in a total of four runs. • Goembiewski's two -run shot in the second gave Miami a 6-0 lead. • Miami exploded for seven more runs in the fourth inning. Oh and Kunkel slugged homers early. Carter, Erin Pinter Patton and Kunkel (2) added rbi's. • The Flashes put three runs on the board in their half of the fourth. Two of the three were unearned as KSU capitalized on Miami's only error of the contest. • Pinter's fifth inning double to left scored Parks with Miami's final run. • KSU put two on with a pair of two-out walks, but Chevrier sealed the win with her seventh strike out.
