Miami topples Rockets to end Savage Arena streak By MIKE SMITH TOLEDO, OH -- The Miami RedHawks continued one streak and ended another Friday as they put on a strong performance to defeat hosting Toledo 87-73 at Savage Arena. With the victory, Miami (17-0, 5-0 MAC) remained undefeated on the season. Toledo fell to 9-7 (3-1 MAC). It was MU's first win at Savage Arena after 11 straight losses. Both teams were . . . . . . undefeated in MAC play, helping set up a solid Friday matchup for a national television (CSSN). Miami lived up to the moment, outscoring UT 56-36 before intermission. The RedHawks connected on a blistering 66 percent from the field and 50 percent (9 of 18) on threes in the first 20 minutes. Miami expanded its advantage to 28 points in the second half before cooling off (39.2% overall, 23.0% on threes). Toledo 's defense also forced enough MU miscues to earn a 10-2 advantage in points off turnovers in the second half. Although UT outscored Miami 37-31 after intermission, the Rockets could get no closer than 14 points. RedHawk senior forward Antwone Woolfolk led all scorers with 21 points. Brant Byers followed with 20, 18 of which came in the first half. Eian Elmer added 16. Sonny Wilson topped the Rockets with 10 points. Joining him in double figures were Sean Craig (16), Leroy Blyden Jr. (12) and Austin Parks (10). Miami took an early lead and was already up 32-21 before it went on a 19-7 run. Byers (18) and Elmer (10) combined for 28 of the RedHawks 56 first half points. Woolfolk had just five at the break, but added 16 in the final period to lead all scorers. NOTES:
• The RedHawks played sans freshman guard Trey Perry. Miami head coach Travis Steele indicated Perry was ill Tuesday but expected he might be back for the next game. • Miami returns home for two games next week. Central Michigan comes to Oxford Tuesday (7 p.m.), followed by Buffalo Saturday (1 p.m.). The Bulls are currently 3-0 in MAC play. • Toledo hosts Ohio Tuesday and visits Kent State Friday. • Miami out-rebounded the Rockets 36-33 overall. • MU got 16 points off the bench. Toledo's bench contributed 15. • Peter Suder recorded a game-high six assists. With Ipsaro out for the year, Suder has inherited even more ball handling/distribution duties. His 6.0 assists per game so far is fifth among MAC players in league play. Comments are closed.
