Elmore hits career-high 24 as MU beats Hawks By MIKE SMITH OXFORD, OH -- Ketron Shaw and Cardell Bailey got their points (and then some), but the Miami RedHawks (2-1) used a more balanced attack to down Maryland Eastern Shore (1-3) 88-70 Tuesday at Millett Hall. Shaw, who is one of 13 new players for new head coach Cleo Hill Jr., came into Tuesday's matchup averaging 24 points per game. He put up 27 against Miami, hitting 10-of-15 from the field along the way. Bailey added 21 points. However, they were the only two Hawks to reach double figures. Miami put four players in . . . . . . double figures. Sophomore Eian Elmore led the way with a career-high 24 points. He connected on 9-of-7 from the field overall and 5-of-7 treys. Kam Craft contributed 18 points, while Antwone Woolfolk (14) and Peter Suder (13) also reached double figures. Miami took an early 15-5 lead, but UMES pulled within one (38-37) with 2:01 to play before intermission. Miami led 42-38 at the break and stayed in front with small leads for much of the second half. While the Hawks were able to move in front, all four occasions were by one point and short-lived. Miami reclaimed the lead for good at 8:25 on an Elmore jumper in the paint. It was the first of MU's next five baskets (and 13 points). The RedHawks led by 10 (78-68) with 4:37 to go and outscored UMES 10-2 down the stretch. NOTES: >> The RedHawks rewarded head coach Travis Steele with a win on his birthday. >> Miami sophomore center Reece Potter (7-1) saw his first action of the season. The RedHawks recorded 14 offensive caroms and scored 18 second-chance points. Maryland Eastern Shore had six offensive rebounds and eight second chance points. >> Woolfolk, the transfer from Rutgers, helped MU build its early lead and led pulled down eight rebounds. Elmore had a game-high nine boards in addition to his big offensive night. >> The RedHawks hit 15-of-32 3-point tries.
