Steele adds Dakich to coaching staff

OXFORD, Ohio – Miami University head men's basketball coach Travis Steele has announced the hiring of Andrew Dakich as an assistant coach. Dakich joins the RedHawks after spending the last four seasons on the coaching staff at Illinois State University.

"I am excited to add Andrew Dakich to our program. I have known Andrew for a very long time. He has a terrific basketball pedigree from his playing days at Michigan and Ohio State, along with his coaching career at Elon and Illinois State," said Steele. "Andrew has an extensive player development pedigree, specifically with guards. He also has a reputation for being a very good offensive coach. He will have a huge impact on our student-athletes here at Miami."

Dakich, who is . . .

. . . a son of former Bowling Green head coach and ESPN sportscaster Dan Dakich, most recently completed his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Redbirds, where he served as the offensive coordinator. While coaching for Illinois State, the team matched or bettered its win total every season, as the Redbirds concluded the 2025-26 season (23-13, 12-8 MVC) with their best record since 2016-17. Illinois State was 3-3 in NET Quad 1 contests during the 2025-26 season, the first time the program has had multiple Quad 1 wins in a year. It is also the first time since 2010 that the Redbirds recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons.

Before joining Illinois State in 2022-23, Dakich worked as director of basketball operations at Elon University for two seasons. Prior to his time with the Phoenix, he spent three seasons at Ohio State, the first playing as a graduate senior with the men's basketball program and the final two as a graduate assistant and then a program assistant.

During his season with the Buckeyes under Chris Holtmann, Dakich appeared in all 34 games, averaging 19 minutes per contest and recording 72 assists. He helped lead OSU to 25 wins, a 15-3 mark in Big Ten play and a Round of 32 appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Before arriving in Columbus, the Zionsville, Ind., native spent four years as a member of the University of Michigan basketball program. He earned All-Big Ten Academic honors three times with the Wolverines (2015-2017). During his four seasons at Michigan, the Wolverines compiled a 93-50 record and made three NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by an Elite Eight run in 2013-14 and a Sweet 16 appearance during his redshirt season in 2016-17.

Dakich holds his undergraduate degree in history from the University of Michigan, and a master's degree in sports coaching from Ohio State University.

"I'm grateful and fired up for the opportunity Coach Steele has given me here at Miami," said Dakich. "I can't wait to work alongside this staff, build relationships with the players and engage with the RedHawk community!"
