The next two games are at Millett Hall as MU hosts Wright State Saturday (Nov. 9, 1 p.m.) and Maryland Eastern Shore Tuesday (Nov. 12, 7 p.m.). Certainly, there will be some . . . Historic win is also key win for RedHawks Martin now owns most MU football wins ![]() OXFORD, OH -- Surging Miami (4-4, 3-1 MAC) scored on 10 of 11 possessions and registered 518 yards of total offense while posting a historic 46-7 victory over Central Michigan (3-5, 1-3 MAC) Saturday at Yager Stadium. With the win, Chuck Martin picked up his 60th victory as head coach of the RedHawks. That moved him in front of Randy Walker, who had 59 wins as Miami head coach. At the same time, Miami's third straight win moved the RedHawks into a three-way tie for second place behind Western Michigan (4-0 (MAC). Like MU, Ohio and Bowling Green are also 3-1 in conference play. Toledo, which handed Miami its only defeat, lost to Bowling Green Saturday. The RedHawks went up 3-0 on CMU when . . . Chippewas run game among Miami challenges MU offense seeks to continue production ![]() By MIKE SMITH A Miami team that has won two straight meets a Central Michigan team coming off two losses Saturday at Yager Stadium. For MU, the recent formula has been a strong defense and improved offense. Miami, which averaged 11 ppg through the first five weeks, has averaged 34.0 points against Eastern Michigan (38-14) and Ohio (30-20) over the last two weeks. In fact, the RedHawks owned a 30-6 lead on the Bobcats before going to a more conservative attack in the final 15 minutes. CMU has been among the MAC leaders in scoring and currently ranks third (29.9 ppg). However, it is eighth in scoring defense (30.3 ppg). Saturday will be the 31st meeting between the two programs with the RedHawks holding a slight 16-13-1 advantage. Miami has won each of the last four meetings, dating back to 2016 and hasn't lost at home since Oct. 5, 2013. The 2019 contest was at Ford Field in Detroit as Miami edged the Chippewas 26-21 to win the MAC Championship. In their most recent meeting, MU claimed . . . RedHawks require 'pedal to the metal' mindset ![]() By MIKE SMITH The 2024 football schedule hasn't exactly done Miami any favors thus far, and there may not be much in the way of favors through the final five weeks. Not only can the RedHawks ill afford another loss in their quest for a MAC title game appearance, they need some help. The 2024 elimination of East and West divisions mean teams with the top two records go to the championship game. On the surface, it sounds fair enough. However, scheduling changes have complicated some things. Western Michigan is the only MAC-undefeated team remaining. Six other teams have 2-1 conference records. Miami is one of the six, but has the loss to Toledo. In a direct head-to-head tiebreaker between MU and UT, the Rockets have an advantage. Since Miami and Western Michigan do not . . . Gabbert tosses three TDs as RedHawks down Bobcats ![]() By MIKE SMITH OXFORD, OH -- Quarterback Brett Gabbert added to his success against Ohio Saturday as he tossed three touchdown passes to lead Miami past the Bobcats 30-20 at Yager Stadium. With his three TDs, Gabbert now has 12 career touchdown passes and just one interception when facing Ohio. It was the second straight game in which the senior did not throw an interception -- another sign that he is finding his groove after last year’s leg injury. Along with Gabbert, the RedHawks . . . Stakes high as Miami and Ohio meet for 100th time ![]() By MIKE SMITH RedHawks vs Bobcats! Saturday marks the 100th gridiron meeting between Miami and Ohio. Typically, the Battle of the Bricks tends to be a hard-fought contest regardless of records. However, in most recent years, the matchup has also been a critical hurdle for reaching the MAC title game. Miami (twice) and Ohio (once) have represented the MAC East in three of the last five seasons, with the RedHawks winning both of their appearances. With the elimination of divisions this year, it now comes down to two teams (out of 12) with the best records. Both programs still have hopes of reaching the championship tilt. Ohio (2-0 MAC) is one of three MAC teams that are still undefeated in conference play. Buffalo and Western Michigan also have 2-0 MAC marks. Miami is 1-1, including a tough 30-20 loss at Toledo Oct. 5. The RedHawks . . . Success at EMU came from many sources First catch is first 2024 TD for two RedHawks ![]() By MIKE SMITH In his weekly press conference Monday, Miami football head coach Chuck Martin began by calling Saturday's win at Eastern Michigan "a total team effort." They are words journalists hear all the time ... at least from winning coaches. They are also words fans typically hear from many winning coaches immediately following victories. Yeah . . . yeah!! Coach-speak!! For sure! But also right on the money for describing last Saturday's Miami win. Aside from a fumble while "trying to do to much" on a punt return, the RedHawks impressed in all three phases -- offense, defense and special teams. What's more, they did it with a deep dive into the roster. Miami's tough schedule has . . . RedHawks thrive on 'complimentary' performance Offense, defense click in win over EMU ![]() By MIKE SMITH YPSILANTI, MI -- With their backs against the wall, the Miami RedHawks (2-4, 1-1 MAC) executed their best all-around performance of the 2024 season Saturday when they defeated Eastern Michigan (4-2, 1-1 MAC) 38-14 at Rynearson Stadium. It was a bounce back win for MU, which fell at Toledo last week and desperately needed a victory -- both to avoid falling to 0-2 in conference play and also to avoid a 1-5 record at the schedule mid-way point. Eastern Michigan, meanwhile, was looking for its fourth straight win and a 5-1 mark that would have been its best start since 1989. While not perfect, MU came up with big plays . . . Turnovers, kicking game among keys as MU meets Eagles ![]() By MIKE SMITH Eastern Michigan seeks its fourth straight win, and the Miami RedHawks chase a MAC win Saturday when the two teams meet in Ypsilanti. The Eagles are one of two MAC teams with four wins in 2024, and MU lost to the other team (Toledo) last week. As was the case last week, there is a "good offense versus good defense" challenge to the matchup. Although the RedHawks' "D" hasn't performed to 2023 levels, it still ranks fifth among MAC teams in scoring defense after facing a very tough schedule through five outings. EMU, meanwhile, ranks second in scoring (32.4 ppg), one spot behind Toledo. The RedHawks and Eagles have battled . . . |
