Heavner takes helm as MU embarks on MAC play Falcons pass rush is among challenges By MIKE SMITH After four weeks of football, the Miami RedHawks are down to their third quarterback. That's not exactly the way you want to start Mid-American Conference play, especially when the MAC's top sack specialist will line up for MU's opponent. Redshirt senior Myles Bradley was something of a whirling dervish last week, recording a school record 4.5 sacks in a 14-6 Falcons loss to South Florida. He also forced two fumbles, recovered one and broke up a pass while earning Mid-American Defensive Player of the Week honors. Whether Bradley plays against Miami remains to be seen. "He's still doubtful right now," Bowling Green Head Coach Eddie George said in his weekly press conference. "He's had a procedure done, so we'll have to wait and see." In any case, pass rush pressure is particularly concerning when Miami senior Caleb Heavner is getting his first RedHawks start. It's also his first FBS-level start as Heavner previously played at D-II Fort Hayes State. While there, he threw for 3,398 yards and 24 TDs in 24 games. He also recorded 255 carries totaling 1,094 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns. Heavner gets the start this week after . . . (MVSmith/MRO) By MIKE SMITH OXFORD, OH -- David McComb ran for one score and threw for 312 yards with two touchdowns as Miami (2-2) rallied from an early 14-0 deficit to defeat visiting UConn (2-2) 24-21 Saturday at Yager Stadium. McComb actually led MU rushing, as well, using three runs to pick up 33 yards (and the TD). Still, it was backup Caleb Heavner at the helm when Miami drove 28 yards in 11 plays to set up freshman Brady Stidham's tie-breaking 33-yard field goal with 1:58 remaining. A final Huskie drive ended at the MU 38 after four straight incompletions. Heavner, a senior transfer who . . . The matchup marks the first time Nebraska and Miami will face off. The teams are slated to face off again during the 2031 season. "Arrowhead Events is . . . Consistent execution needed against talented UConn Independent Huskies start well under former Toledo HC and QB By MIKE SMITH Last week's Miami loss to Cincinnati is a defeat RedHawks head coach Chuck Martin said will stick with him for a variety of reasons. At the same time, neither staff nor players can afford to dwell. It's homecoming week in Oxford, and MU will be hosting a UConn team that is off to a 2-1 start after a pair of impressive seasons in 2024 (8 wins) and 2025 (9-wins). Most recently, the Huskies handed Southern Miss a 48-20 defeat in Hattiesburg (MS). Quarterback Kalieb Osborne led the UConn offense, throwing for two touchdowns and running for two more. If Osborne's name sounds familiar . . . First half production not enough as MU falls to 'Cats By MIKE SMITH CINCINNATI, OH -- A first half to remember and second half to forget. That might sum up the Miami RedHawks day in Saturday's 35-31 loss to Cincinnati at TQL Stadium. Down 28-7 at intermission, the Bearcats stormed back to outscore MU 28-7 in the final two quarters. Fumbles, an interception and missed field goal attempts hampered Miami's second half offense. Meanwhile, the RedHawk defense managed just two stops and forced no punts during Cincinnati's 28-point run. Ironically, Miami's troubles . . . (MVSmith/MRO) By MIKE SMITH OXFORD, OH -- After absorbing a thrashing in Week One, the Miami RedHawks (1-1) dealt out a thrashing Saturday afternoon at Yager Stadium. Redshirt freshman quarterback David McComb completed all 13 of his passes while throwing for three touchdowns and running for another as MU defeated Holy Cross (0-3) 45-7. McComb was pulled after two quarters as Miami took a 42-0 lead to the locker room. Head Coach Chuck Martin substituted liberally in the second half. Lynel Billups-Williams led RedHawk receivers with four catches totaling 73 yards with one TD. Maleek Huggins (3 catches, 54 yards) and Christian Ross (3 catches, 51 yards, 1 TD) also had multiple receptions. Damarion Witten's one catch was good for a 10-yard score. Crusaders offer first measure of MU improvement By MIKE SMITH After last week's battering in Pittsburgh, Miami fans likely aren't taking anything for granted. That includes this week's matchup against Holy Cross, an FCS Division I team that is looking for its first win after two straight 35-10 losses. "We got taken down to the woodshed. ... We weren't prepared enough on either side of the ball," Martin said of Pitt's 59-14 win over Miami. Given a new quarterback with no prior game experience, some sputtering of the offense was probably to be expected. However, MU was shut out in three of the four quarters. More surprising . . .
